Workshop
Introduction to Praat and Praat scripting
The goal of this 3-hour workshop is to learn to write basic scripts in Praat, a free software package for the scientific analysis of speech in phonetics (http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/). First, we will briefly cover basic (i.e. manual) Praat use (e.g. the Praat visual interface, different types of Praat objects and methods, annotation of sound files, spectral and pitch analysis). We will then learn how to batch-process large numbers of annotated sound files using the Praat scripting language. Finally, we will illustrate other types of scripts that can be easily implemented in Praat (e.g. extraction and processing of sound clips from a large speech corpus, manipulation of pitch and duration for the creation of experimental stimuli).
